A hairwork and half-pearl mourning ring, circa 1795 The oval glazed plaque containing a hairwork scroll with seed pearl and wire accents, within a half-pearl surround, the reverse engraved 'Maria Heathcote OB 5th Jan. y 1792 At 85' to a tapered band, ring size O Maria Eyles was born in June 1706. She married George Heathcote of London in 1724, who became Lord Mayor of London in 1742. Upon the death of her brother Edward in 1792, Maria inherited Southbroom House in Wiltshire, which then became known as Heathcote House and is now the home of Devizes School. From a private English collection.
