A heavy bronze standing mortar with monogram of King Frederik IV of Denmark and Norway, 1704-08
Beschreibung: Bronze cast with yellow-brown patina. Balustered, slightly bellied barrel in 13 mm calibre with cannon muzzle. At bottom a robust, octagonal base pierced with one hole on either side. On the barrel a raised monogram of Frederik IV under royal crown, in the bottom section a small touch hole with bolted powder pan. Height 30.2 cm, weight 26.98 kg. Frederik IV, King of Denmark and Norway, Duke of Schleswig and Holstein (1699-1730), born on 11 Oct. 1671 in Copenhagen, died on 12 Oct. 1730 in Odense/Denmark. 400 such mortars were made in the Copenhagen foundry by Master Friedrich Holzmann between 1674-1708 for the Royal Copenhagen Armory. They met the demands of the Holstein reserve, siege artillery, navy, and fortresses (for example Rendsburg and Glücksstadt).
