A highly unusual early 19th century Chinese export silver gilt fruit set, circa 1820 mark of Tu Hopp
Comprising twenty-four fruit knives and twenty-four three pronged fruit forks. Each with a reeded mother of pearl handle, with reeded end cap. A fruit fork and knife later French replacements, Paris circa 1900 by Victor Leneuf. Five end caps detached but present. (48)
Knife length – 20.7 cm / 8.1 inches
The mark of a T is illustrated along with pseudo hallmarks in Forbes, Crosby, H.A., Devereux Kernan, J.,& Wilkins, R.S., Chinese Export Silver 1785 to 1885, (2000), Museum of the American China Trade, p. 247, fig. 276.
The mark is found upon a circular teapot stand with ovolo edge (No. 215), the item has a Portuguese provenance and a continental crest possibly for Viscount Nova Goa for which the authors speculate that the piece was made for the continental market. The presence of the French replacements in the present lot and the style of the set would appear to support this.
