A lacquered, gilded and polychromed wood figure Monjû Bosatsu. Edo period
Seated in meditation on a lotus throne, holding a flower, behind him a seperately carved halow, the crown and jewelery of gilt copper and glass beads, the figure placed on top of a mighty lion with a saddle cloth on its back and eyes of glass. Figure and base each inscribed ""45010 Bälz"" and ""45010 Japan Bälz"". Small damages.

Collection Erwin Bälz (1849-1913, according to the inscriptions on the object. From 1876 to 1905 the anthropologist, medical doctor and physician to the Japanese emperor Erwin Bälz lived in Tokyo, where he built an important collection of Japanese art, which is now housed in great parts in the Lindenmuseum in Stuttgart.
