A large Berlin KPM porcelain platter from a dinner service for the Prussian court banker

Model no. 1054. Finely painted with insects around a bouquet of wildflowers. Blue sceptre mark with underglaze blue dash, pressnummer 32, incised II in the basal ring. D 31.6 cm.
C. 1793.

This plate most probably originated from a dinner and dessert service created in 1793 for the Frankfurt banker Johann Jakob Willemer (1760 - 1838). The extensive service was commissioned from KPM by the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm II. It was presumably ordered as a gift in thanks for Willemer's successful work as a financer for Prussia and the Prussian royal family, especially the first placement of Prussian bonds on the Frankfurt and international financial markets. These bonds financed the costly campaigns against revolutionary France. Willemer was appointed royal Prussian privy councillor in September 1789, and the King became godfather to his son Friedrich Wilhelm when he was born in October 1790. Willemer was made Prussian court banker in January 1793.

Provenance

Antiquitäten Plötz-Peters, Berlin.
