A large Edwardian yacht's dining picnic hamper
A large Edwardian yacht's dining picnic hamper,
by Drew & Sons, the wicker basket with leather straps, complete with extensive contents, the fall front, locks, and contents stamped with the maker's name, the lid inscribed 'S.Y. Albion',
78cm wide
49cm deep
45cm high
Provenance: Christie's auction, Elveden Hall, 21-24 May 1984.
The Albion was a turbine yacht launched in 1904. It was 1300 tons and 270ft in length and was built for Sir George Newnes MP by Sir William White. Speaking at the launch, Sir William said that if the Albion's owners wished to emulate Lord Brassey and go around the world, he could do so in comfort.
During its life, the yacht was chartered by the King of Siam in 1906, hosted the King of Sweden in 1911, was used by the Duke of Somerset to cruise the Mediterranean in 1913, before eventually being bought by Sir Thomas Lipton who, in 1930, renamed her the Erin.
From The Principal Contents of an East Anglian Estate.
Sold for £500
Condition report:
Wear to leather strapping, and to wicker, which has started to degrade in places but is overall not too bad, the contents appear largely complete and includes enamelled plates, wicker clad bottles, cutlery, numerous Tiffin boxes, wicker clad glasses etc, it seems likely that some of these parts may be associated but a good number are labelled Drew and Sons.
