A large Meissen porcelain model of a red squirrel

A naturalistic figure of a squirrel with a nut in its mouth on an earth mound base, wearing a collar with a gilt metal chain. Unglazed underside, blue crossed swords mark to the back of the base. Restored breakage to the tail, both ears reattached. H 21.5 cm.

Literature

There are two versions of this large squirrel model, one holds the nut in its mouth, the other in its paws. Both types in the catalogue of the Axel Guttmann Collection (Kunze-Köllensperger, Mainz 1999, no. 3f). Another squirrel with a nut in its paws in the C.H. Fischer Collection, sold by J.M. Heberle (H. Lempertz Söhne) Cologne 1906, lot 87 and a further example formerly from the René Fribourg Collection, vol. 1., sold by Sotheby & Co, London, 25th June 1963, lot 21.
