A large Meissen porcelain model of the tailor on the billy goat

Sumptuously decorated figure of a tailor in courtly attire riding on a billy goat. Dressed in a pale purple justacorps with a seafoam green sash, an iron red chequer patterned vest and yellow hose. Blue crossed swords mark on the unglazed base. With a plaster filled firing crack, restorations, and breakages to the spools of thread. H 42, W ca. 42, D ca. 25 cm.
Model by Johann Joachim Kaendler, 1737, produced mid-18th C. / possibly in the 1760s.

"This model is described in Kaendler's workshop records from May 1737 as follows, “a billy goat upon which is seated a well-dressed rider, modelled in clay and almost one cubit high, holding a flag and carrying a bag with pieces of cloth in it under his arm alongside various tailor's tools” (from the German in Pietsch, a.a.O., p. 47).
The tailor bears a striking resemblance to Count Heinrich von Brühl (1700 – 1763), the Saxon and royal Polish prime minister and director of the Meissen manufactory. He was raised to the rank of imperial count on 17th May 1737. This figure may have been made in connection to a celebration on this occasion during which the count (and possibly the rest of the court) wore costumes. We know of no other example of this model dating from the 18th century."

Literature

"Illustrated in cat. 300 Jahre Zarskoje Selo & Meissner Porzellan ""Das weiße Gold"", St Petersburg 2010, p. 36 f.
Cf. also Berling, Festschrift zur 200jährigen Jubelfeier der ältesten europäischen Porzellanmanufaktur Meissen, 1910, Dresden 1911, fig. 47, there also named ""Brühlscher Schneider"" (p. 36).
