A large Zand Qur'an, Iran, late 18th century, 613ff., Arabic manuscript on paper, with 14ll. of black naskh within cloudbands on a gold ground per page, gold and polychrome verse markers, headers in red naskh on a gold ground with polychrome floral detail, marginal decoration in gold and polychrome,opening bifolio with elaborate gold and polychrome floral decoration to margins and headers, final bifolio with polychrome floral illumination and gold floral decoration, with fine seal impressions of Muhammad Khudayar Khan, Khan of Kokand (r. 1845-75) dated 1279AH, brown leather binding with tooled central medallion either side, folio 31 x 18cm. Muhammad Khudayar Khan was Khan of Kokand in the Fergana Valley (present day Uzbekistan) between 1845 and 1875 (with interruptions). He is well-known for the large palace complex he built in Kokand in 1871. The Khanate became a Russian vassal state in 1868.
