A large bronze group after Giambologna

With fine golden brown patina, on a yellow Giallo di Siena marble base. Depicting the rape of a Sabine woman. A large chip to the edge of the base. H 99 cm, H with base 106 cm, W of base 53, D 28 cm.
18th / early 19th C.

This bronze statue is based on the famous marble group housed in the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence, which has gone down in the history of art as a perfect example of the "figura serpentinata" motif. The artist also produced a smaller bronze version for the Duke of Parma Ottavio Farnese, which is today kept in the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples. This version does not show the defeated Sabine man, but the victorious Roman gains a panel of fluttering drapery that accentuates his expansive striding stance and lends the figure a new and varied dynamic and direction. The present group is one of the rarely cast examples displaying the exact same dimensions as the original composition, and thus effectively conveying the feel of the "private" version made for the Duke of Parma.

Literature

Published as a cast from the second half of the 17th century in cat.: "wahre Wunder. Sammler & Sammlungen im Rheinland", Cologne 2000, no. C 93, p. 121.

Exhibitions

"Wahre Wunder. Sammler & Sammlungen im Rheinland", Josef-Haubrich-Kunsthalle Cologne, November 5th 2000 - February 11th 2001.
