A large famille-rose ‘three rams’ vase
Qing dynasty, Jiaqing-Daoguang period

with ovoid body sweeping up to a waisted neck and flared rim, flanked by a pair of iron red dragon handles, decorated around the body in soft enamels with a continuous scene of three goats in a meadow beneath overhanging trees, amidst peonies, asters and nandinia berries, all between two borders of ruby-ground ruyi encircling the shoulder and base, the neck with large lotus wreathed in scrolling foliage on a ruby-red ground between yellow upright leaves and turquoise ruyi at the rim, the base with an apocryphal iron-red Qianlong mark
H. 71.4 cm, 28⅛ in.

Condition Report:
The neck of the vase appears to be potted separately and joined to the vase (there is a luting line at the junction between the shoulder and the body showing on the interior and repaints showing to the exterior around the base of the neck), which may indicate that this has been done at a later date, although the decoration and ruby red enamel on both, the neck, shoulder and foot are well matching. There is some scratching in scattered areas around the shoulder and the foot. There is a small glaze gap near the iron red mark with a thin forked hairline extending in the glaze, probably original to the firing. The mark is otherwise rubbed. There are some expected firing imperfections, including iron spots, burst bubbles.
