A large pair of Restauration era ormolu cassolettes

Cast in several parts and screw-mounted. Baluster-form vases with tall scroll handles. The original lids with recessed candle nozzles. Decorated throughout with neoclassical relief motifs in matte and shiny gilding. H 45.5 cm.
Paris, around 1820, attributed to Thomire & Compagnie.

Pierre Philippe Thomire (1751 - 1843) learnt his craft in the workshop of the famous Parisian bronzier Pierre Gouthière, an outstanding ciseleur-doreur. He received his first commissions for the court in the 1780s. He achieved his breakthrough under Napoleon, who provided him with numerous commissions. After Napoleon's fall, he had major financial problems, but the company continued to exist until the 1850s, although it traded under the name "Thomire & Compagnie" as of 1819.
