A large pearlware storage jar, mid 19th century, painted with a portrait of a Chelsea pensioner sipping tea from a saucer beside a small table, after a painting by Michael William Sharp (1777-1840), impressed mark 'W Cloake / 3 Liverpool Street / Moorfields', with a later wooden cover, the jar 19.8cm high. (2)
William Cloake was a shopfitter in the Moorfields area of London and this jar may have been one of a set made for a pharmacy or grocer.
