A late 15th century high relief figure of a S ..., Heiliger mit Kirchenmodell
A late 15th century high relief figure of a Saint with a church model, probably Austrian
Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and deeply hollowed out. With remains of older polychromy. A large figure of a saint standing in a gently swaying pose designed for a frontal viewpoint. The slightly crossed feet are noticeably splayed. The youthful saint wears a large headdress, plain pleated robe, a richly draped cloak pulled across the body, and fashionable pointed shoes. The church model which the saint holds could potentially identify him as the Austrian Margrave Leopold III (1073-1136), who was canonised in 1485.
With repairs to the shoulders and the plinth. Insect damage. Minor wear. Height 126 cm. Provenance
Rhenish private collection.
