A late Gothic stone sculpture of Christ on the cross
Expressive sculpture in light-coloured limestone of Christ on the cross. The head inclined to the right, the features with a deceased appearance. The bleeding stab wound in his right breast reproduced in lifelike detail, the ribs indicated at his sides. The loin cloth around his hips knotted on the right. Broken beneath the knee. The originally attached arms have been lost. The erect body drawn up according to severe Gothic style. The back of the sculpture undressed. Height 73 cm.
Provenance: From a Belgian private collection. Previously in a private collection in Gelsenkirchen, acquired from the Häferlin estate from Bühl in Baden circa 1960.
