A mahogany four post bed

[ translate ]

A mahogany four post bed, circa 1800 with some later elements, the gadrooned cornice above a pair of reeded turned tapering posts with fluted urn terminals, joined by rectangular bedrails, on square section tapering legs and oversized spade feet, together with a quantity of green linen bed hangings and a bed cover, 248cm high, 148cm wide, 200cm deep

Provenance: Waystrode Manor, Kent

Condition Report:
Marks, scratches, wear and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Some old repairs. old chips and splits commensurate with age and use. Some additional scratching in areas. Some fading. The bed appears to have been stored in a barn or similar storage therefore requires cleaning overall. The rectangular fittings to the interior side of the posts at the foot end of the bed must have been present to support a foot board which is now no longer present. The pediment is associated to the bed and appears to be 20th century in date. The headboard also is associated and appears to be of similar date. The rear posts are plain in comparison to the other posts as one may expect, and may have been designed to be covered by fabric. There is also a burr in the timber of the same posts (head end) The bolts present to secure the elements of the frame together are possibly associated to the bed and are not a matching set. Additional or alternate bolts may need to be located to secure the bed fully. In any case we would recommend that a restorer or joiner is employed by the buyer in order to construct the bed securely for use. The small moulded panels made to cover the bolts at the head end of the bed are modern/ 20th century. Some metal fittings may be later associated. There are fillets of timber immediately adjacent to the positioning of the plain stretchers of the bed frame where they enter the upright posts, therefor it appears that the height/ positioning of the current rails has been adapted/ altered. Where the bolts enter the posts there have also been later fillets of timber introduced into the upright posts (see images) There are no slats present to support any bed base or mattress and no other bed base or mattress present with this lot. Various wear, fading and staining to the fabric fittings/ hangings. The hangings are not complete. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition.
