Imperial Lapidary Works, Ekaterinburg, c. 1830

Imperial Lapidary Works, Ekaterinburg, c. 1830
the oval shallow bowl set upon spreading circular stem and supported on square stepped base
height: 35cm (13 3/4in).

Provenance
Galerie J. Kugel, Paris
Private European Collection

Literature
J. Kugel, Treasures of the Czars: Russia & Europe from Peter the Great to Nicholas I, Paris, 1998, pl. 296

In 1826, the architect I.I. Galberg prepared a series of malachite projects which included several variants of bowls on small pedestals, a Medici vase and a gadrooned amphora on high pedestals. The projects were carried out in the private studio of Maderni in St. Petersburg (two Medici vases from the collection of The Royal Collection Trust and Victoria and Albert Museum, L.A. Budrina, "History of the object in the context of museumfication: attribution and history of 'Medici' Malachite vase from the collection of the State Medical Museum 'Tsarskoe Selo'", in Palaces, mansions, estates. Museum Format: Materials of the XXIV Tsarskoye Selo Scientific Conference, 2018, pp. 136-143) and at the Ekaterinburg Lapidary Factory (a pair of square bowls, the State Hermitage Museum, are reproduced in N.M. Mavrodina, Art of Russian stone-cutters of the XVIII-XIX centuries, 2007, pp. 230-231).

From the drawing for this series (RGIA, f. 468, op. 12, d. 1038, p. 650) a round bowl was produced and sent as a gift to the Duke of Wellington in 1826 (Stratfield Saye House, N. Guseva, O. Suchov, "Diplomatic gifts from Tsar Nicholas I of Russia to the Duke of Wellington", in Apollo, January 2001, pp. 34-40). The proportions of this subject and the complex shape of the bowl fully corresponds to the pattern of the oval example. The nature of the mosaic set with small fragments of pleated (dark radiant) malachite, the use of talc-chlorite as the base for the mosaic, as well as the shape and size of the object allow us to attribute it to the Ekaterinburg Lapidary Works of the 1830s.

We are grateful to Dr Ludmila Budrina for assistance in cataloguing this lot.
