A mid 19th century Italian micromosaic plaque, circa 1850, possibly from the workshop of Michelangelo Barberi, depicting St. Peter's Square and St. Peter's Basilica, in a black glass surround, 4.5cm x 3.4cm, in a fitted red leather case with a sticker to the reverse reading, Mosaici a Roma, 148. Via Rasella; and a further 19th century Italian micromosaic plaque, depicting the Roman Forum, with a view of the Temple of Vespasian and Titus between the Arch of Septimius Severus and the Temple of Saturn, with the single column of Foca in the distance, 4.6cm x 3.7cm, in a gilt tooled fitted case
148. Via Rasella was the address at which Michelangelo Barberi set up a studio and a mosaic school in 1847 with the backing of Tsar Nicholas I.
Condition Report:
St. Peter's Square - there is a section of black glass to the front that has cracked and has come away from the panel and needs gluing - please see photo. The tesserae appears intact. Scuffs and some nicks to the glass. The box with some general wear. The panel measures approximately 4.5cm x 3.4cm. The Forum - There are cracks apparent - please see images. The cracks are mainly visible from the back. The tesserae appear intact from the front apart from a section to the upper right hand corner where there is a crack. The box with wear. The panel measures approximately 4.6cm x 3.7cm.
