A mid to late 18th century enamel snuff box, Staffordshire circa 1760
Of rectangular form with gilt metal hinged mounts worked in the French manner with wavy engine turned exterior and a rope twist thumbpiece. The gently domed lid painted with a bucolic rural landscape with a rocky outcrop in the foreground surmounted by trees with sheep below, a lake and a parish church spire in the background and a traveler with donkey near to two figures reclining, all reserved within gilt foliate scrolls against a white ground. The sides with vignettes of still life ensembles of fruit on a stony ledge in the manner of Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin (1699-1779), the front vignette with the fruit attended to by a bird. Each reserved within foliate scrolls and raised trellis work and lattice work.
