A mixed group of six Mediaeval encaustic glazed tiles

[ translate ]

A mixed group of six Mediaeval encaustic glazed tiles, 13th/ 14th century, four as a set and forming a circular motif, mounted together in a stained wood frame; another, fragmentary but held together by its old mortar backing, the sixth, an element of a larger motif

The framed group of four 27cm square overall

PROVENANCE:

Previously in the collection of the late Professor Charles Reginald Dodwell, Pilkington Professor of History of Art and Director of Whitworth Gallery, Manchester University 1966-89; and thence by descent

Condition Report: All six tiles are variously and comprehensively chipped, knocked and scuffed overall, consistent with considerable age and use.

The framed group of four tiles are at least each all in one piece. Their thickness is difficult to gauge because they are framed and backed, but it is in the region of 2cm.

The other tile that remains in one piece has a circa 1.5cm loss across one corner. It is 2cm thick.

The fragmented tile which is held together by its cement backing is 2cm thick excluding the cement.
