A nice little Roman bronze figure of a Lar

A nice little Roman bronze figure of a Lar, c. 1st - 3rd Century AD, wearing a wreath and flowing robes, right hand aloft and left originally holding a cornucopia. Nicely detailed and rather scarce. H: 3 in (7.6 cm). Nice green patina. Often referred to as household gods, and may have been hero-ancestors, guardians of the hearth or fields. Specific Lars often had particular areas under their guidance or protection, such as roadways, towns/villages and local militia. The Lars compared to the major Roman deities were more of a localized entity mostly seen in the plebian or lower class communities. Ex English private collection acquired in the 1950's - 60's.
