The elongated creature shown running, facing ahead, its hind legs stretched out and its forelegs drawn in for compactness, the soft wood painted white with red highlights.

The work, carved slightly in Ittobori, is in the style of Bushoan Tessen or Morikawa Toen, working in the late 19th century. For a study of a hare in similar attitude by the former, see Lazarnick, NIA, p.1093; and for a netsuke of running horse by Toen, ibid., p.1096.
