A pair of Antique Chinese Embroidered Mounted Panel "Forbidden Stitch", Ching Dynasty
The panel has been embroidered on a satin ground, with its central feature being a glorious forbidden stitch pink/peach peony, with satin stitched batterflies above and below the peony. There are Buddist symbols embroidered on both. The ?forbidden stitch? is a very demanding skill in embroidery. It was so difficult to do that it was said the needlewomen went blind executing the stitch.The panel is full of symbolism. The peony was an emblem of spring. And because of its delicate beauty, it became a symbol of love and feminine beauty.
