A pair of Bonn silver candelabra made for the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order

The tall, round base supporting a smooth shaft and tapering nozzle with separately attached two flame candelbrum with curved branches and vase shaped nozzles. The base and nozzles engraved with the cross of the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order. H 31 cm, weight 2,950 g.
Marks of François Seraph Koll, 1792.

This pair of candelabra is the only known work by Koll to date. It was apparently commissioned by Archduke Maximilian Franz of Austria, the youngest son of Emperor Franz I Stephan and Empress Maria Theresa, who was Grand Master of the Teutonic Order from 1780 to 1801 and Prince Elector and Archbishop of Cologne from 1784 to 1801.

The seat of the Electorate had been Bonn since 1597, where Maximilian Franz arrived on 27 April 1784 to take up the affairs of government of his dioceses. A good year later, on 8 May 1785, he was consecrated bishop by the Archbishop of Trier, Clemens Wenzeslaus von Sachsen, in Bonn Cathedral.
