A pair of Chinese blue and white 'Façon de Venise' vases

Qing dynasty, Kangxi period

With typical slender flaring necks flanked with pairs of winged handles each adorned with five pinched ornaments, above globular lower sections, and covered overall in a dense pattern of leafy floral scrolls, each approx. 20.5cm high (2).

清康熙 青花繪花卉圖紋雙耳瓶一對

Cf. 'Façon de Venise' is a term that generally refers to European glass imitating the shapes and forms typical of Venetian wares from Murano. The present lot exemplifies how the shapes and tastes travelled much farther than Europe, probably also through the presence of Jesuit missionaries at the Chinese court in the 17th and 18th century. The shape of the neck and handles of 'Façon de Venise' vases resemble very closely that of Venetian wine glasses of the same period, see an example in Bayerischen Nationalmuseum, Munich, illustrated by Rainer Rückert (1982), pl.13, fig.53

Condition Report:

One vase with approx. 6.5x5cm U-shaped restored rim section. Both with expected areas of hairlines and restoration to the fragile handles.
