[ translate ]

A pair of English mahogany hall chairs
second quarter 19th century
The backs with central roundel painted with a heraldic crest and motto SIT. NOMEN DECUS.
height 34in (86.5cm); width 16 1/2in (42cm); depth of seat 15 1/3in (39cm)
Provenance:
With Daniel Stein Antiques, San Francisco, California.

Footnote:
The crest as depicted upon this pair of hall chairs is that of the family of Swan.

It is more than certain that a family of Swan and here one would presume that the
family of Scottish stock given that family motto is displayed over the crest in the
Scottish fashion. Sadly, there appears to be a dearth of both heraldic and genealogical
information that would allow a distinct identification of a particular armigerous Swan
family who may well have had these chairs in their possession during the Victorian
period. Of course, the crest may have been borne without authority which was not at
all unusual at that time.
Condition Report: Structurally sound. One chair with break and repair to front corner of seat. Rubbing and some loss of paint to central panels. General marks, nicks, scratches and wear.
