[ translate ]

A pair of French tapestry portières
Circa 1720-30, probably Gobelins
Designed with poppies in an oval ivory cartouche above birds, crossed quivers, and a pair of dressed and dancing monkeys, set on a yellow ground, enclosed by blue outer slip, woven in wool and silk, 230cm high x 88cm wide (2)

Footnotes:
Provenance: Sale, The Mayorcas Collection of Tapestries and Textiles, Christie's, London, 12 Feb 1999, Lot 73.

The design of the panels might be compared to the Gobelins 'Portières des Dieux', and also to the Beauvais 'Berain Grotesques', and with the various works of the respective designers of these sets, Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer, and Claude Audran III. There are also close parallels with the boiseries attributed to Christophe Huet that decorate La Grande Singerie of the Château de Chantilly, and the panels now in the Salon des Singes of the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild at Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.

The Court of Louis XIV often used the iconography of mythology, most notably in the Grand Apartement of the Palace of Versailles where a different Deity was assigned to each room.
