A pair of George II-style painted and parcel-gilt console tables

[ translate ]

in the manner of William Kent, the verde antico tops with rectangular canted corners, the parcel-gilt base painted brown to simulate mahogany, the fluted frieze with carved gesso elements centred by a shell connected to the legs by two oak swags, the scrolled legs with fish-scale and foliate and guilloche carving, on block feet

81cm high, 142cm wide, 81.5cm deep; 2ft. 7 ¾in., 4ft. 8in., 2ft. 8in.

Condition Report:
A decorative demonstration of typical Kentian design motifs. It is probable that these date from the first half of the 20th century. The painted and gilt surface with chips and losses throughout, and with a build-up of grime that would benefit from a gentle clean. There is evidence of several old repaired detachments to the swags: the reverse of these shows that they are fragmented but secured internally. There is some movement to the carved elements, and the bell-flower at the bottom of the apron of one example has been knocked askew. The tops generally in good order, with some veining - at points, this has been filled in.
