A pair of Louis XVI style gilt-bronze mounted verde antico...

[ translate ]

of baluster shape, each with a lid, the finial, rim and base of the body ornamented with acanthus leaves, the body with grotesque masks in the shape of a dolphin, raised on a square plinth

20.5cm high, 10.5cm wide, 8cm deep; 8 ⅛in., 4 ⅛in., 3 ⅛in.

Condition Report:
In overall good condition. Minor rubbing to gilding.
With felt pads underneath. Lacking covers.

Catalogue Note:
This pair of vases is modelled after a Louis XVI mounted Chinese green celadon pair from the collections of the Louvre Museum (see Lunsingh Scheuleer, Chinesisches und japanisches Porzellan in europãischen Fassungen, Braunschweig, 1980, p. 349, fig. 347). These dolphin-shaped mounts were clearly quite a success in the 18th century and for generations to follow as they have been the source of inspiration for many bronze founders in the 19th century. The quality and the chasing found on the present pair suggest that their mounts have originated from a skilled maison such as the Escalier de Cristal in Paris.
