A pair of Meissen porcelain vases with floral appliques
Openwork basketweave "gu" form vases applied with freely moulded floral appliques. Smoothed, unmarked base. A firing crack to the upper edge, one vase with a restoration to the rim, some appliques restored, minor chips. H 17 cm.
Around 1745.
In 1757, following the death of his mother Sophie Dorothea, née Princess of Brunswick-Lüneburg, King Frederick II inherited several sets of these openwork vases, which were produced in the mid-1740s and designed to resemble baskets with richly moulded floral decoration.
An identical vase with varying gold outlines can be found in the Nasjonalmuseet Oslo collection, inv. no. OK-05179.
