A pair of North Italian carved giltwood armchairs, probably Piedmontese,...
with distressed floral pink silk upholstery, restorations, regilt
Condition Report:
Generally with some rubbing and losses to gilding, and some chips and losses to surface. Signs of repairs and mouldings re-stuck (see the residual glue for example on the frieze of overlapping roundels to the top of one armchair). Minor age craquelure along the lines of construction and corresponding losses (see joints of arms with backrests).
There is a detached moulding (about 36cm. wide) to the frieze on the left side of one armchair, across the seat rail (this would benefit from re-attachment), and sections to the frieze on the opposite side show signs that it has been re-stuck the wrong way around. Some of the other friezes of this type along the seat rail very slightly loose.
Underside not inspected as covered by black fabric. Evidence of an old woodworm activity which no longer appears to be active.
As mentioned in the catalogue description, the upholstery is very distressed and would benefit from further attention and replacement. Otherwise sound and sturdy.
