A pair of Régence ormolu dragon-form two-light appliques

circa 1720

The backplates each in the form of a dragon with splayed wings issuing two scrolling foliate candlearms, one applied with lizard; the nozzles replaced. (2).

H: 17, W: 10 1/2, D: 9 in.

PROVENANCE:

Le Louvre des Antiquaires.
The collection of Georges Perrier, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The form of these appliques is highly characteristic of the dramatic French Régence period during the first years of Louis XV's reign. As exotic and naturalistic motifs began to supplant more architectural Baroque styles, fantastical beasts like dragons and serpents, which suggested both medieval romance and Oriental mystique, began to appear particularly on such objects as chenets, sconces, and chandeliers intended to be used with fire.

The present pair of appliques, in the form of muscularly modeled and defensive dragons, is distinctly related to a pair of chenets sold Christie's, New York, 9 October 2013, lot 646, and to another pair sold Marc-Arthur Kohn, Paris, 13 April 2012, lot 63.

Further dragons of this form can be found on a carved giltwood console table dated 1710-20 in the collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, inventory number 26546, and on a pair of ormolu mounts for chenets dated 1720-30, also in the collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, inventory numbers 2009.88.1.1 and 2009.88.1.2.
