LOT 108

A pair of Roman Crucifixion Spike type iron nails

[ translate ]

A pair of Roman "Crucifixion Spike" type iron nails, c. early 1st Century AD, from Roman Britain. These nails were made within 45 years of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, which most likely occurred in AD 33. If it were not for the archaeological context of their discovery, these nails would be indistinguishable from the crucifixion nails used in Judea at the time. These nails are part of a discovery by Sir Ian Richmond in 1961 while excavating a Roman fortress called Inchtuthil in Roman Britain. Both about 3 5/8 in (9.2 cm) and well-preserved for iron! Probably too small to have been used as a crucifixion spike, these are still a fantastic example of an early 1st century AD Roman nail dating to the time of Christ. Ex Santa Barbara private collection; Ex Harlan J. Berk.

Condition: The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections , the effects of aging, or repair/restoration work. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid, and we will be happy to give you a full overview of the items' condition.
