Vera Ignatyevna Mukhina (1889-1953) was one of the most prominent Soviet sculptors. Her well-known work, "Worker and Kolkhoz Woman", was the centerpiece of the Soviet pavilion at the 1937 International Exhibition in Paris. It became iconic immediately, and the powerful image of the figures holding the hammer and a sickle joining to form the symbol of the Soviet Union was widely disseminated.
