A pair of epaulettes belonging to King George of Saxony

[ translate ]

Fields of silver lace, with applied silver general field marshal’s batons, silver crescent moons, silver braid interwoven with green, rigid silver fringes, on the reverse reinforcement lacquered in black (lower edges trimmed with black velvet), red cloth lining. Slightly damaged in places, traces of age.
George (1832 - 1904), experienced in military matters, was King of Saxony between 1902 and 1904. During the War of 1866, he commanded the 1st Equestrian Brigade of the Saxon army. In the Franco-Prussian War, he first commanded the 1st Infantry Division No. 23 and as of 19 August 1870, after his brother, Crown Prince Albert, had taken over command of the Maas army, the entire 12th (1st Royal Saxon) Army Corps. He held command of this corps until 29 March 1900. In 1867, after joining the Prussian-dominated northern German army, the Saxon army adopted the established regulations of the Prussian army. The Kingdom of Saxony only had two general field marshals. On 11 July 1871, Crown Prince Albert of Saxony, was raised to this rank, as was his brother, Prince George of Saxony, the later king, on 15 June 1888.
This emphasises the unique character and the extraordinary rarity of the epaulettes on offer.
