Condition Report:
An impressive set of antlers in typically restored condition following excavation and given their great age. The antlers would however benefit from further remedial work as there is one significant loss to one point/fork as visible in the catalogue image and numerous restored breaks and filler repairs to other points/parts of the antlers – some of which are quite crude and could be improved. Generally, peripheral edges and points with chips and losses. The surface with ingrained dirt and dust – some paint splatter too – which would benefit from a clean by a qualified restorer. The antlers are currently suspended using hooks, a chain and a small mount for the skull. Sotheby’s recommend having the antlers re-mounted by a specialist to ensure they hang safely.
