A pair of gilt and silvered metal twin light candelabra in Chinoiserie taste to designs by Edouard Lièvre
A pair of gilt and silvered metal twin light candelabra in Chinoiserie taste to designs by Edouard Lièvre, likely by Ferdinand Barbedienne, circa 1870-80, of pear form, the openwork foliate sconces atop arms cast as cherry blossom branches, each on three feet cast as elephants masks, 36.5 cm high
CATALOGUE NOTES:
Having spent much of his childhood in a printmaker's workshop making lithographs, designer and illustrator Edouard Lievre (1828-1886) was all too familiar with the eclectic printed material that was circulating in Second Empire France. He would have likely come into contact with Far Eastern decorative motifs and themes through prints and ceramics imported into Europe by traders. These Chinese and Japanese designs would be a defining inspiration throughout his career.
