A pair of ormolu "retour d'égypte" candlesticks
White marble, fire gilt bronze/brass. Table candle holders with nozzles screw-mounted to figures of Isis standing on marble plinths forming the shafts. Minor chips around the edges. H 33.5 cm.
Around 1800, in the style of Friedrich Bergenfeldt, St. Petersburg.
The German-born bronze caster Friedrich Bergenfeldt (1760 - 1822) worked in St Petersburg throughout the 1790s and, with a stopover in Paris, for the entire first decade of the 19th century. He is recorded as having collaborated with the cabinetmaker Heinrich Gambs, who was trained by Roentgen, for whom he supplied ornate bronze fittings. Bergenfeldt specialised in monumental vases and candelabras, which he also supplied to the Russian court.
