Inscriptions: to the bowl, in the centre, La fata illa 'ali la sayf illa dhu'l-faqar, 'There is no youth (as brave as) 'Ali, no sword (as sharp as) dhu'l-faqa'; to the inner band, The nadi 'ali quatrain; the exterior including Qur'an, chapter II (al-baqarah), verses 255-257, the shahadah, followed by the repeat of la ilaha illah allah, 'There is no god, but God', invocations to God and one of His attributes, or the word bismallah, 'In the name of God' and one of His attributes and parts of chapter II (al-baqarah), parts of verse 255.
