H.R.H. Princess AMELIA (1783-1810). - William COLLINS. The Poetical Works. London: 1800. Octavo (7 ¼ x 4 3/8 inches; 183 x 108 mm.) 20 stipple engraved plates. (Light browning, occasional minor spotting.) Contemporary marbled calf, covers with decorative border of gilt interlocking rings, the flat spine divided into six compartments and elaborately decorated in gilt, red morocco spine label in the second compartment, the others with repeat decoration in gilt, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, speckled edges to bookblock (extremities rubbed and lightly bumped). Provenance: H.R.H. Princess Amelia (oval letterpress presentation label to preliminary blank ‘Her Royal Highness Princess Amelia to H. Penney, October, 1804’); H. Penney (label).
The 15th and last child of King George III presents a book – the label is very specific and very unusual. ‘Princess Amelia was born on 7 August 1783, at the Royal Lodge, Windsor, the youngest of George III and Queen Charlotte's 15 children as well as the only one born at Windsor Castle.[1][2] It is often said that she was her father's favourite; he affectionately called her "Emily"…. Amelia has been described as a beautiful girl with ruby lips and auburn hair. Reportedly she was the "most turbulent and tempestuous of all the Princesses". However, she is also said to have been amiable, spirited, unselfish and intelligent. These qualities led her sister-in-law Princess Caroline, who was known to despise her in-laws, to call Amelia the "most amiable of the bunch". Amelia was a favourite of both the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Sussex, who called her a "lovely creature". Amelia adored the former and once told him that she had always loved him better than her other brothers.’ (wikipedia). I have not been able to discover anything about H. Penney.
