A profusely bone-inlaid South German Renaissance wheel-lock carbine, circa 1580
Description: Octagonal barrel rifled with six grooves in 11 mm calibre. Brass and iron dovetail sights. Smooth lockplate, the small external wheel with struck decor, lightly engraved hammer springs. Spring-loaded pan cover with release button. Full stock of fruit wood with rich inlays of engraved and partially green stained bone. Portrayal of animals, female and grotesque heads between scrolling leaves and ornaments. On the cheek piece and sideplate Renaissance cartouches with mythical figures. Patchbox with spring-loaded sliding lid, on the butt cap a removed family coat of arms. Inserted wooden ramrod with engraved bone tip. Ground barrel surface, lock partially pitted. One part of the forestock and a small number of bone inlays very well replaced. Length 96 cm.
