A rare Copenhagen decorative platter with moulded flowers

These hand-formed porcelain flowers were a speciality of this manufactory, and found the zenith of their expression in the large potpourri vases for the flora danica service. No other manufactory of the 18th century could produce such naturalistic flowers shown in the height of their bloom in such finely arranged compositions. It is still not known for which service these plates were produced, but they are thought to have been commissioned by Queen Juliane Marie (born Princess of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel-Bevern, 1729-96).

Two identical plates in the Museum Schloss Fasanerie (cat. Das weiße Gold des Nordens, Fulda 1992, no. 28). The plate with poppies and roses with a purple drapery, that with roses and tulips a green one. Two further plates with green drapery can be found in the Davids Samling Copenhagen (Dansk Kunst og Kunsthandvaerk, Copenhagen 1983, no. 70).
