A rare Meissen porcelain déjeuner with putti
Comprising an oval tray, coffee pot and sugar box with original lids, milk jug, and two cups with original saucers. All items decorated with finely painted putti in coloured draperies sitting amidst clouds in oval reserves on cobalt blue ground. Blue crossed swords mark, partially with dot, unidentified dreher's mark (tray), incised mark C (sugar pot), various underglaze blue marks: B, W., _, C.O-. and one to three dots in the basal ring. A restored breakage to the left side of the tray, three smaller restorations. W of tray 35.3, D 26.6, H of coffee pot with lid 15 cm.

In keeping with the fashion of the time, the Meissen manufactory modelled this déjeuner on the products of the Vincennes manufactory, not only in form but also in colour and decoration. The radiant and uniform royal blue as a base, which had already been successfully produced in Vincennes as "bleu royale" in the middle of the 18th century - albeit on pâte tendre, which allowed a lower firing temperature due to its lower kaolin content - did not achieve an improvement in Meissen until 1778 at the earliest, under the head mine assessor Carl Friedrich Wenzel. In 1786, he finally developed a new type of blue ground, a "beautiful, well firing blue".
The particularly delicate painting can be attributed to Johann George Loehnig (1743 - 1806). He was one of the "Historien und Genies Mahlern 1. Classe" in Meissen between 1764 and 1770. In 1786 he was still listed as a "figure painter of the most exquisite class" in the manufactory's list of painters. The models for the lush and expressive putti were mostly provided by Johann Eleazar Zeissig (1737 - 1806), called Schenau, who in turn was inspired by François Boucher (1703 - 1770).
