A rare Ottoman leather matara (flask), Turkey, 16th/17th century

the leather body composed of sown sections, set to shoulder with two small suspension loops between a narrow cylindrical neck and opening, short curved spout at one end, embossed leather design featuring openwork arabesque and foliate motifs, stippled throughout, remnants of pigment and gilding

23.5 by 25 by 13cm.

Condition Report:
In overall good condition, the form and design clear, small circular hole near central opening, the leather worn, discolored and the shape with some pressure marks and creases as consistent with age and use, sections of decoration worn off, remnants of red pigment and gilding, parts of the stitching between sections slightly loose, top edge of small spout to side appears to have been broken, as viewed.
