A rare Venetian or façon de Venise beaker and cover, circa 1700
The flared cylindrical form decorated in vetro a retorti with opaque white filigree twists alternating with gauze cable, some containing a single pink thread, the domed cover with a globular finial set on a merese in clear glass, 12.8cm high
Provenance
Paul Gresswell-Wilkins Collection
For a virtually identical covered beaker with a stand see the example in the Corning Museum of Glass (inv. no.67.3.53). Another is illustrated and discussed in Georg Laue's catalogue, Das Weiße Gold von Venedig (2014), pp.127 and 195, no.31. In common with the present lot, these all incorporate several canes containing a single thread of pink glass which Laue suggests is indicative of manufacture around 1700. Another identical beaker and cover is in the Wallace Collection (inv. no.C561), which lacks these coloured threads.
