A rare and unusually large German hand-painted tinplate cloc...
A rare and unusually large German hand-painted tinplate clockwork flying-boat carousel, by Müller & Kadeder, Nuremberg, circa 1909–12, the substantial circular architectural base constructed in three graduated tiers, principally painted in deep red and ochre and surrounded by finely pierced balustrade-pattern galleries, rising from the centre is a cylindrical clockwork housing with domed cover supporting a tall revolving shaft and delicate open wire framework, suspended from the revolving upper frame are six individual pressed-tin gondola boats, each occupied by a hand-painted embossed tin passenger and fitted at the stern with a large multi-bladed propeller, the boats retain extensive original cream-painted decoration, their passengers variously dressed in brightly coloured caps and clothing, the open upper framework is ornamented with a series of shaped painted tinplate panels and crowned by a pair of opposed American Stars and Stripes flags, characteristic of Müller & Kadeder carousels manufactured for the United States export market, specialist records indicate that the firm frequently adapted the flags of its carousels to their intended destination, when wound, the concealed spring-driven clockwork mechanism causes the complete assembly of six suspended boats to revolve gracefully around the central tower, the freely suspended gondolas moving outwards as the carousel gathers speed, approximately 250 mm overall width × 460 mm high.* Literature: The present toy corresponds exceptionally closely with a documented Müller & Kadeder example sold by James D. Julia/Morphy Auctions, described as an important carousel with six gondola boats, rear paper propellers, hand-painted embossed tin riders, American flags and a three-tier reticulated base. That example measured 10 inches wide × 18 inches high, almost precisely matching the present carousel.** Müller & Kadeder operated in Nuremberg between approximately 1900 and 1912 and specialised in imaginative mechanical movement toys, particularly aeronautical subjects and elaborate carousels.
