Property from the collection of Dr. Chan Chi Chin
A rare guan-type lobed washer,
Seal mark and period of Jiaqing

14.5 cm

Condition Report:
Good overall condition, with only a few insignificant wearing to the mouth rim. Minor original burst bubbles to the rim as expected for this glaze type. Minor surface wear.

Catalogue Note:
The graceful form and soft greyish-celadon crackled glaze of this washer draw inspiration from the guan ware, one of the five celebrated kilns of the Song dynasty. Qing emperors often commissioned the imperial kilns to recreate or imitate wares from previous illustrious dynasties as a way to establish links with the past and demonstrate their erudite learning. Even the unglazed footring of the washer has been carefully stained with a brown wash to imitate the appearance of its predecessors. The emphasis is on appreciating the refined elegance of the form itself, the pleasing hue of the glaze and abstract patterns created by the crackles, rather than relying on additional embellishments. Such wares were popular throughout the Qing dynasty and were produced in a variety of shapes.

Provenance:
Acquired in Hong Kong in the early 1990s through Y.C. Chen.
