A rare set of four Flight and Barr Worcester vegetable tureens and covers, circa 1800
Of lobed oval form, the ring handles with foliate terminals picked out in gold, painted in famille rose style with a vibrant Chinese landscape, a boy riding a water buffalo, two gilded geese on the opposite riverbank and a red bird in flight above, red and gold undulating foliate borders at the rims, 30.8cm wide, incised B marks (8)
Footnotes:
Provenance
Bonhams, 13 December 2006, lot 246 (one pair)
Bonhams, 3 April 2007, lot 251 (second pair)

This unusual pattern closely follows a Chinese original and it is possible that these tureens were made as replacements or to match an existing Chinese service.
Condition Report: Tureen bases:Three in good condition with only typical light wear, mostly to the gilding of the rims, some of which can be seen in the catalogue illustration. The fourth has a concentric crack running around the cavetto from one end of the dish to the other; this crack branches at one side of the dish to meet the rim, where there is an associated area of restoration.Covers:All with very minor fleabite chips and nicks to the edges of little significance, some of which are clearly from manufacture as they have been gilded over. Other condition issues are as follows, in order from left as they appear in the catalogue illustration:The first with the ring finial broken off and reattached with a staple repair, together with a chip to the outer edge of the rim of the cover approximately 1cm wide, but otherwise good. The second with a hairline crack through one side of the ring finial where it joins the cover, but the finial has not been off, otherwise good. The third in good condition save for a very shallow flat flake chip to the outer edge of the rim of the cover approximately 9mm wide, and a small chip underneath the rim approximately 4mm wide. The fourth with the ring finial broken and repaired / reattached with staples and rivets, otherwise good.
