A rare shallow document box by Abraham Roentgen
Olive wood, mahogany, and kingwood veneers on solid mahogany and oak with fire-gilt bronze, brass, and steel mounts. Oblong box with bevelled edges, hinged top and handle. The protruding base resting on four curved, angular bracket feet. A finely engraved cartouche-shaped lock plate opens by pushing a button which activates a spring mechanism to reveal the keyhole. The box contains a large mahogany veneered compartment. The lid decorated with rhombus mosaic and kingwood trellis work. The side faces with olive wood veneer. H 10.5, W 31.5, D 22 cm.
