A rare signed and dated Amsterdam bronze mortar

Bronze with dark brown shimmering patina. Moulded vessel with a banderole around the protruding rim inscribed "ALEWYN CROMBOSCH AMSTERDAM AO1755". With numerous dents and signs of wear, minor losses to the upper rim. H 17, D 23.7 cm, weight 12 kg.
Amsterdam, Alewijn Crombosch, 1755.

Alewijn Crombosch died in 1756 in St. Anthoni Breestraat/Nieuwendijk. His foundry continued to be run for a few years by his heirs, who used his moulds.
Another mortar of the same type is housed in the Amsterdam Museum, inv. no. OKA 14516.
